Care For Your Braces

Oral Hygeine

Toothbrushes

Dr. O’Hea recommends brushing your teeth at least 3 times a day when you have braces on. When you are done brushing, make sure to look in the mirror and double check that all of the white plaque has been removed from your teeth. This can prevent the dreaded “white spots” that can occur when patients don’t take care to clean properly.

Any type of toothbrush (manual or electric) are acceptable for cleaning. The most important thing when brushing your teeth is to TAKE YOUR TIME! Brush for at least 2 minutes. Fluoride rinses are also recommended to strengthen your enamel.

All patients are reminded to maintain their 6 month checkups with their general dentists during the course of orthodontic treatment. Your dentist and their hygienists are well trained in cleaning around your braces.

Diet

Foods to Avoid during treatment:

Candy Machine

Fruit
  • Hard Foods
  • Sticky Foods
  • Ice
  • Gum
  • Pretzels
  • Taffy
  • Hard Candy
  • Now-n-laters
  • Uncooked Carrots
  • Caramel
  • Hard Pizza Crust
  • Skittles/Starbursts

You also want to avoid biting into things such as apples, hard sandwiches, etc. with your front teeth.

These foods should be avoided because they are the ones that will break the wires and/or the glue bond between the tooth and the brace. If this happens too often, your treatment progress will be delayed. This could mean that you will have your braces on for longer than your original estimated time.
